The National Rail Museum, established on 1st February, 1977, till date continues to please visitors by its huge collection of locomotives, engines, cars, etc. The complex is divided into indoor and outdoor sections.

Indoor Galleries:The entire indoor gallery is basically divided into 6 sections, portraying ,step by step the history of Indian Railways.
- Gallery 1 displays the early days of Indian railways.
- Gallery 2 shows the development of various types of freight, passenger cars. It also houses different kinds of cutlery, crockery used in the early days.
- Gallery 3 generates interest by its unique teak wood furniture and a working model of Nilgiri Mountain Railway, displayed here.
- Gallery 4 showcases the evolution in field of telecommunications, including various telephone and signalling devices.
- Gallery 5 is devoted to the architectural endeavors of the engineers of the Indian Railways. The model of Pamban Rail Bridge of Tamil Nadu is as impressive as the bridge itself.
- Gallery 6 drives you to the modern side of the Railways. It displays working model of Calcutta metro, electric train, crane, etc.

- An impressive photo gallery in an air conditioned area, displays the rich heritage of the Indian railways.
- A state of the art Auditorium hosts various stage shows.
- Miniature models and artifacts of engines, locomotives are also present.
Over 80 steam engines and other "real size" locomotives are parked outside in an open area ranging from CS, Hasang, Matheran cars, Darjeeling coach to the giant Garrat locomotive. It recreates older times, when engines were used also as saloons and houses famous royal ones like The prince of Wales Saloon(1875), Maharaja of Mysore's Saloon(1899), Maharaja of Baroda's Saloon(1886).
Major Attractions for Visitors-
- The Toy Train covers the entire outdoor complex and is extremely popular with the children. This diesel machine is shaped as a steam locomotive and offers an amazing ride for a nominal charges.
- Dating back to 1907, India's only working steam Monorail, also runs providing a delightful experience. One has to purchase a nominal ticket for this.
- The Souvenir Counter offers exciting momentos in the form of Audio visual media, books related to locomotives, stamps, postcards, key rings, greeting cards, etc. The museum Library is as storehouse of information.
- Sections like "Akansha" for visually handicapped and "Gyandeep" for physically handicapped children are also present. Wheel chairs are provided for comfort. The entire history of the Indian Railways is available in Braille scripts to assist the children.
- The model of India's first Train, that ran from Mumbai to Thane in 1853, marking the inception of an important development in Indian transport.
- The Patiala State Monorail Tramway engine which runs on a single rail.
- The Fairy Queen, which is the oldest operating steam locomotive. It is certified by the Guinness Book Of World Records for operating between Delhi Cantt. and Alwar.
