The National Archives of India is a storehouse of all historical documents, or basically non-current records of the Government of India in English, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit, etc classified as Public records, Private papers, Manuscripts and Oriental records. It houses more than 38 lac files, 64 thousand volumes, over 1 lac maps, around 2400 manuscripts.

An ultimate paradise for a scholar or a researcher, the museum is representative of the holdings of the National archives and became operative in July 1988. Records from 1748 A.D are present. The National Archives of India Library can be cited as the most comfortable research location in the city. It houses a rich collection of over 1,70,000 publications of books, journals, gazettes, monographs, Parliamentary debates, and other referrals. Access to the library is free of cost.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AT THE MUSEUM

  • The oldest document ever preserved by the National Archives is a Parwana of Ala khan, in Persian. It dates back to 1352.
  • The 1625 Hukm of Noor Jahan.
  • A prospective plan of Bahadur Shah Zafar's mausoleum in Rangoon.
  • Share certificates of Delhi Cotton Mill or popularly known as DCM Ltd. ,which dates back to 1989.
  • The 1904 Bengal Smoke Nuisance Bill.
  • An amazing showcase is of a Dictionary in eight languages.
  • Padhiti Sikhsha is also depicted.
  • The famous Ain-i-Akbari, which provides information on Akbar's reign, his administration, techniques, philosophy, customs, etc in Persian. This 1824 A.D old huge document was prepared by Abul Fazl.
  • Apparatus and equipments used in manufacturing of Tea in Kumaon, are present. 
  • A Persian translation of Hindu epic Mahabharata, known as Razm Nama.
  • Seals of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Maharaja Dalip Singh.
  • Religious seal of Bohra community. Bohra is considered as a sub sect of Islam largely. This religion is more of a combo of Yemeni, African, Egyptian, Indian culture.
  • A tripartite treaty between the British East India Company, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Shah Shuja.
  • A copy of Hindu religious book Bhagwad Gita.
  • Treaty between British East India Company ans Siam on trade related matters, dating back to 1826.

How to Reach: Nearest metro station is Central Secretariat ( Violet Line). One can either walk or take a local bus like that of route no. 630, 783, 720, etc to reach here in around 10 minutes
Important Information: Photography is not allowed in the main and private reading rooms.
