Birla Mandir in DelhiBirla Mandir (Birla Temple) also known as Lakshmi Narayan Templeis located in the west of Connaught Place. The main temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth and prosperity) and Lord Vishnu (considered to be the preserver). 

Birla Temple was built by famous industrialist G.D. Birla in 1938 and was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi with a promise that people of all caste and creed will be allowed to enter the temple.

 It is also said that Mahatma Gandhi was also a part of the first puja and aarti (prayer) conducted at the temple. Built under the guidance of Pandit Vishwanath Shastri, the foundation stone of the temple was laid by the Ruler of Dholpur Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh.

Birla Temple is one of the popular tourist destination as well and attract more than thousands of devotees on the festive occasions of Diwali, Ram Navami and Janmashtami.  Another attraction of the temple is the Lord Krishna temple where the idol of Lord Krishna can be seen in multiples reflections placed in the temple.

The temples architecture resembles Oriya and contemporary form of the traditional Nagara style and the walls are embroidery with quotes from Upanishads and the Hindu epic Bhagwat Gita with Hindu symbols.  Birla temple is built with the red Dholpur stones and has magnificent carvings. There are frescoes on life of Lord Buddha and also depicting the scenes of Hindu mythology.

Important Information:

  • Mobile, Camera and other electronic items are to be submitted before entering in the temple complex. The locker room is available at the entrance gate and lockers are provided free of cost.
  • Best time to visit Birla Temple is during Janmashtami as the temple is elaborately known for it and thousands of devotees gather during this auspicious day to pay reverence to Lord Krishna.
  • The temple also attract devotees during the festivities of Diwali and Ram Navami.
