Amrit Udyan in Delhi

The famous Amrit Udyan is located in the premises of the official residence of the President of India – The Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi. A beautiful mixture of Mughal and British styles, this place harbors a vivid collection of various forms of flora and was designed by the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for Lady Harding. 

Earlier the Garden was named as Mughal Gardens at the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s House) which have been renamed to Amrit Udyan on 27 Jan 2023.

The Mughal Gardens, a horticultural paradise in the sprawling premises of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, which has been renamed to ‘Amrit Udyan’ is spread over 15 acres and boasts of over 150 varieties of roses, and tulips, Asiatic lilies, daffodils and other ornamental flowers.

Spread over an area of 15 acres, this garden is famous for hundreds of variety of flowers with more than 250 varieties of roses alone and 2500 dahlias.  Some of the roses present in the garden are exclusively named as ‘Taj Mahal’, ‘Queen Elizabeth’, ‘John F Keneddy’, ‘Mr. Lincoln’, ‘Christian Dior’ and many more.

The Amrit Udyan is open for public once in a year during the months of February and March. ‘Udyanotsav’ is organized every year when people can visit the garden on all day of the weeks except Monday, when the garden is closed down for maintenance. 

The entire place is divided into square grids by two long channels running vertically and horizontally. The garden area consists of three parts namely the rectangular garden, the circular garden and the long garden. 

There is some seating and eating area available inside the Rashtrapati Bhawan complex where once can rest and eat. The entry into the garden is through Gate No. 35 of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Major attractions of Amrit Udyan

• Main Garden: There are six magnificent lotus shaped mountains that help to detoxify one’s mind and soul. One can also catch a glimpse of peacocks, mynahs, parrots and spot bills; apart from the elaborate variety of trees, climbers, shrubs and flowers. It has more than 250 varieties of roses like Blue Moon, Lady X, rare Green Rose, Oklahoma, etc. Planted in the square grids of the lawns are the Bakul / Moulsri trees. Cypresses and China Oranges decorate the pavements. The garden consists of a plethora of fragrant shrubs, flowers including Raat ki Rani, Juhi, Climbing roses, Petrea, Harshingar, etc.
• Terrace Garden: There are two gardens on the either side of the main gate and same plants, as in the Main Garden can be found here.
• Purdha or Long Garden: This area is enclosed by high walls and contains a shaded sitting area / passageway made of sandstone. Creepers like Adenoclyma, Jasmine, Parana Paniculata, etc on the walls, make this western end of the Main garden lively.
• Circular / Sunken / Butterfly Garden: As the name suggests it consists of circular flowerbeds and carefully placed fountains. Colorful butterflies and fragrant plants promise a treat to one’s eyes. Green house, nursery, the impressive Bonsai Collection and the office of horticulturalist are also present here.
