Passport Offices in Delhi

An Indian passport is the country’s most basic travel document issued by its government to all its citizens. With this, a citizen of Indian can travel anywhere abroad and it also helps as important documentation of his or her proof of citizenship and address under "The Passports Act" (1967).

In India, the Consular Passport & Visa (CPV) Division functions under the Ministry of External Affairs as the main passport organisation responsible for issuing Indian passports on request to all Indian citizens. Today, passports are issued all over the country in its 37 Passport Kendras and at 162 Indian missions comprising high commissions, embassies and consular posts in different countries abroad.

The Passport Office in Delhi was one of the first five passport offices to be established in India in 1954. The others were at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Nagpur. Delhi’s Regional Passport Office is located at Bhikaji Cama Place.  This was the first passport office in Delhi. Subsequently, others came up at various locations such as Daryaganj, Asaf Ali Road, Shakarpur, East Delhi and Pitampura.

It was among the first five Passport Offices to be setup. The others were at Bombay(Mumbai), Calcutta(Kolkata), Madras(Chennai) and Nagpur.

Types of passports issued by Passport Offices in Delhi:

There are three kinds of passports issued by the Indian passport offices in Delhi. All three have a gold outline of the four Asiatic lions in gold outline stamped on the cover below which the words “Republic of India” are printed in gold. These categories of passports are:
  • Ordinary Passport:

Indian Passport

This is issued to an Indian citizen who can use it for a vacation abroad or for business travel. It has a blue cover and has 36 or 60 pages and is valid for 10 years from the date of issue after which it can be renewed for another span of 10 years.
  • Diplomatic Passport:

This is recognized by its maroon cover and is issued only to certain members of the Indian national government, diplomats, statutory authorities, judiciary, official public couriers and any other personality authorized by the Indian government.
  • Official Passport:

This has a grey cover and is meant only for certain non-gazetted government officers or anyone authorized by the government to be deputed abroad on a government mission. Who can apply for an Indian passport? All citizens by birth, descent, naturalization or marriage are allowed to apply for Indian passports.

Eligibility criteria for Getting a Passport:

An Indian national or one by marriage or naturalization is deemed eligible for a passport.

How to apply:

Anyone who fulfills the basic criteria for getting a passport can apply for one online. For a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), a form muse be filled online and submitted.

Documents required for application:

With the application form, one must submit documents proving a photograph, one’s address, birth certificate, ECR/Non-ECR status, etc.

Passport services offered:

Passport services in Delhi are various and include:
  • Issue of a fresh passport: First-time applicants are given a passport for the first time.
  • Re-issuance of a passport: A fresh passport can be given in certain circumstances, such as:
  • Change in status or certain other particulars
  • Passport validity is due to expire or has expired within three years
  • Passport validity has expired over three years ago
  • The pages of the passport are exhausted
  • The passport is physically damaged or lost
  • Providing Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

Passport Renewal:

An Indian passport is usually valid for 10 years after the date of issue. It can be renewed only in the ninth year, not earlier. When a new passport is issued, the old one ceases to exist and is returned to the passport holder. All current visas in the earlier passport will continue to exist and can be used until the passport is out of date.
