Janpath Market in Delhi

Janpath is one of the most popular markets in Delhi. Janpath means “Jan-People Path-Path” that is “People’s path” named in early 90’s. Janpath Delhi, is located on the Radial Road1 that starts from Connaught place. Janpath, Connaught place, Palika Bazar are famous shopping areas of Delhi. A road from Connaught place named as Radial Road1 leads to Janpath and Palika Bazar. The road that leads to Janpath, Delhi, is also connected to “Rajpath” or “Queen’s Way”. Janpath road connects Connaught place on one side and Lodhi road on the other side.

If you haven’t done shopping in this area yet, do visit once. Janpath Market Delhi has many things (without guarantee) that you may not find in malls. Janpath market is famous as budget shopping market. The crowd in this area includes less Indians and more foreigners. You may find street full of boutiques and other shops. There are branded shops too and chain-shops. You can buy apparels, fashion items, shoes, handicrafts, etc.

To list few items sold in this area are traditional Indian dresses, daily wear western dresses, Jewellery (silver, junk, imitation), footwear (Juti, Mojris, Kolapuris, etc), Linen items, cotton garments, Rajasthani famous vegetable colour paintings, artefacts, crafts, carpets, CDs and DVDs, home furnishing items, furniture, decorative items, etc.

A road from Janpath leads to Tibetti Market, it exists from many years on this road. You can buy items like wall hangings tapestries, old hand work bags, coins, brass idols etc from this place.

One of the famous lanes here is Janpath Lane which lies towards the west of Janpath. If you are fan of items of Gujarat, this is the best place to buy in Delhi. This market is famous as Gujarati market run by Gujarati community. Here you may find shops with items like Gujarati wall hangings, curtains, cushion covers, jewellery items, table covers, handicraft textiles, table covers etc. You can also buy traditional Gujarati items like traditional dupattas, lehengas, cholis and traditional Indian Saarees with famous Gujarati zari work from this place.

You may also find many shops where tribal items are being sold like old tribal jewellery, ethnic banzara items and tribal traditional items. The items sold here area actually minor defected items or export rejected items.

A must visit place in Janpath market is Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE). At this place you can buy traditional Indian handicrafts/fabrics/linen. There are four floors which display the items for sale which are of good quality and at different price.You can buy bags with mirror work and needle work which are made in Rajasthan.

  • Traditional Indian wear and western wear
  • Footwear which includes slippers and shoes made of leather like judis, Mojris, Kohlapuris.
  • Jewellery items like silver jewelleries with stone work, earrings, bracelets, finger rings, toe rings, etc.
  • Home Decoration items handicrafts or artifacts like wall hanging, carpets, show pieces, lamp shades, flower vases, etc.

Also there are many facilities within walking distance from Janpath Market like Money Changers, Western Union money transfer etc. You can find many small cafes and restaurants in this area. Delhi markets are also famous for duplicates, so beware while purchase of items.  Janpath market has many boutiques established back in 1950. You may get to buy items of Kashmir like pashmina shawl, Kashmiri wool, Scarves, ornaments, Kurtis, Chudidar, etc. You can even buy home furnishing items here like curtains, carpets, etc. Handicrafts and artefacts attract major crowd. You can see a tourist office on the corner of Janpath and Connaught place. Nearby is the Tibetan market which offers a good range of arts and crafts from Himalaya. You can even shop items for home decoration from this place like wall hangings, craft items, art pieces, bead items, etc. This market remains closed on Sundays.

There are many road side stalls, hawkers, street vendors, moving vendors who sell artificial jewellery, handicraft items, drums, etc. You may find many of the sellers speaking good English as their main customers are foreigners.

Tips for shopping in Janpath:

Do carry lots of cash along with you as there are many shops where you may not get the facility to swipe your card (credit/debit). Be careful while walking on the street as there are many pick pockets, cheaters. Also remember to bargain that is negotiating on the price offered to as low as more than 50%.

Metro Station:

The connectivity to this area is going to be better as the construction of the metro line to this area will be completed by 2015. The metro line will connect Janpath with Dariyaganj, Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, and Red fort.

Parking in Janpath:

There is a facility of underground parking but due to increase in traffic it is hard to find any parking place here. Because of the facility of metro rail the traffic has reduced a little. Also, one of the measures taken by government to control the traffic is increase in parking charges. Janpath and Palika market are located in Connaught place; parking place of palika which is furnished with better facilities is very popular.

How to reach Janpath Market

Janpath market is located in Connaught place. To reach this place by metro rail till Connaught place(Rajiv Chowk Metro Station). To reach this place you have many options like Local train, Metro rail, Local bus, Taxi, Auto-rickshaw, etc. Best way to reach this place is metro rail, as almost all the metro train running in New Delhi passes through Connaught Place.  


You can even opt for city bus service to reach Janpath Market. There are old and green, AC local city buses running across the city of Delhi. You can hire a taxi or can hop on to metro train from Airport metro station to reach this place. You can also choose local train to reach Janpath Market.
