Churches in Delhi

India had been under the control of imperial British rule for more than 200 years, therefore many churches were built during their period of rule over India. Delhi too can boast of some famous churches which were constructed during that period.

Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Delhi

Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is located near the Gol Dak Khana, New Delhi. Henry Medd was the designer of this church and Rev. Dr. E. Vanni, Archbishop of Agra, laid its foundation stone in the year 1929. The construction of the church started in 1930 and the most beautiful parts of the church are its broad arches, polished stone floors and towering curved roof.

The main Altar of the Church was donated by Sir Anthony de Mello and it is made of pure marble. The Archbishop of Agra, on the hand, presented the altar furniture, vestments and a bell and the whole project was completely financed by the colonial officers of the British Empire. An Italian influence can also be noticed in its structure as the white pillars are very beautifully designed which support the canopy.

The Church organizes functions on certain days of the year and the major ceremonies held at the Cathedral are Easter and Christmas. Daily Prayers are held in every morning and evening and the special prayers are held on Sunday morning.
