Directorate of Health Services (DHS)
Directorate of Health Services (DHS): In every state not only government but non- government organizations provide the health care facilities to its citizens. In Delhi, DHS is the prime government organization under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of NCT of Delhi which serves the health care facilities to the population of Delhi through its various outlets existing in Delhi i.e. dispensaries, health centers, school health clinics and mobile health clinics.
In December 2006, 14 hospitals working under the administration of Department were declared as independent establishments under the control of their respective superintends.
The directorate is intensively concerned in providing better health facility to the population of Delhi by contacting various government and non-government institutions on the health related issues. For this DHS is regularly involved in coordinating and implementing various health programmes at national and state level.
Besides this the directorate of health services is also involved in setting up of new health outlets in the deprived areas which are in the outskirts. With this, continuous efforts are also made to improve the facilities in the existing outlets. For establishing the new outlets the directorate in coordination with the government agencies is involved for acquiring land in the various areas of Delhi depending upon the population by making the appropriate use of the available resources.
To provide the better facilities and administration Delhi has been divided into eight districts each of which is headed by Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs), who are under the control of DHS. CDMO’s are responsible to look after the proper functioning of health and dispensaries in their individual district.
