Government in Delhi
India is a federal state having a multi party practice in country. The two major political parties are National Congress Party and Bhartiya Janta Party these two are the leading parties who decide the future and direction of the Indian Politics, besides this there are several other regional and small parties which play a dominant and important role in Indian politics especially at the time elections.
Secondly, in some of the states these regional parties have monopolistic control in their legislative assembly lagging back the two major parties in state control. In India, elections are held after five years, and sometimes the mid-term elections are held when the ruling government looses the vote of confidence brought against it in the parliament or in the state government.
The legislative control of Delhi had been mostly under the control of
Indian National Congress. After the re-establishment of legislative
council in 1993, after 1956, during the elections held in 1990’s the
second major political party Bhartiya Janta Party under the leadership
of Madan Lal Khurana came into the power, but could not maintain its
line up in elections that took place in 1998, when Congress government
came into power and after that in two more successive assembly
elections Congress party hold its control on elections under the
auspice of Mrs. Sheila Dixit by making her Chief Minister for third
time and giving three consecutive wins to NCP.
The fourth assembly elections of Delhi Assembly were held in 2009 bringing the hat-trick win for the then Chief Minister Mrs. Sheila Dixit, when the residents of Delhi shown their confidence in her administration.
