Sports in Delhi

There is not an universally accepted definition for sports in particular. For a layman a sport can be described as a kind of physical activity that is performed in discipline by set of certain rules, this activity when played between two persons or group of person is known as Sports match.

Delhites have always been active in the field of sports. There are many sports academies, sports clubs, training centers situated in Delhi. Even there are certain universities set up by Delhi govt. to impart knowledge about sports.

Cricket has always been the favorite sport everywhere, whether its talk of any country or a small village, one can easily find the craze for cricket in all age groups and Delhi is not exception to this. The city also holds  very popular stadiums like Feroz Shah Kotla Cricket ground,  which host national as well international level cricket matches.

Despite of cricket the other games that are played with full enthusiasm are hockey, tennis, soccer and high profile games of golf, polo and car races. Not only this the traditional Indian games like khokho, kabbadi, glass balls are also equally played by the young kids in Delhi.

Apart from the regular sports Delhites can also enjoy  adventure sports like golf, rock climbing, hang-gliding, canoeing, riding, bowling, ballooning and so on.

Delhi has been also regularly organizing the national and international sports events of badminton, snooker, football from  time to time.

The first major sport event organized in Delhi during the new millennium were Afro-Asian games which were held during 2001. The other major events hosted by Delhi earlier were Asian games of 1951 & 1982, in 1989 Delhi successfully hosted the Asian track and field Championship, then again in  Feb., 2000, Delhi hosted the Thomas and Uber Cup – one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments.

Now again Delhi is in limelight by organizing the 19th Common Wealth Games from October 3 to October 14th 2010, which is the second largest sport event after the Olympics and towards which whole world is looking forward.
