Roads & Streets in Delhi

New Delhi is one the world’s busiest cities. It has the maximum number of cars compared to any other metro in India. Various parts of the city remain clogged due to heavy traffic jams. To over come this, the government has constructed several flyovers across the city and many more are in the pipeline. The most important roads in Delhi include: Ring Road, Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, Lodhi Road, Saket, Vasant Kunj, Greater Kailash, Janakpuri, Karol Bag, Vasant Vihar, South Extension, and Janpath

Ring Road
New Delhi has 2 ring roads,- Inner and Outer Ring Road. The two ring roads have a combined length of 87 km. The Inner Ring Road covers 40km and is signal-free except for a small number of crossings. The road features three lanes in each direction, and is in a state of reconstruction to make it a four lane roadway. Number of flyovers link the Inner and the Outer Ring Road.

Connaught Place
The famous Connaught Place (known as Rajiv Chowk) which is modeled after Royal Crescent Bath, England is the nerve center of Delhi’s business and economy. It is difficult to miss the big circle in the middle with radial roads spreading to all directions.

Eight separate roads come out from the inner circle or the Parliament Street and radial roads 1 through 7 connect different parts of Connaught Place. The continuation of radial road 1 is popularly known as Janpath.

Most shops in Connaught Place remain closed on Sundays.

Lajpat Nagar
Lajpat Nagar is named after the great leader Lala Lajpat Rai. It is divided into four parts I, II, III and IV. Housing colonies like Amar Colony and Dayanand Colony are located here. Lajpat Nagar is also Delhi’s famous market place.

Lodhi Road
Lodhi Road is the one of the most important streets in New Delhi as it houses some of the famous international organizations like UNICEF, and WWF. Lodhi Road is part of the original New Delhi plan. The road has been widened and still defines the Lutyens Building Zone.

Saket
Named after the city of Ayodhya, Saket in South Delhi consists of a market complex and various restaurants. PVR-Anupam, a multiplex theatre is also located at Saket.

Vasant Kunj
Vasant Kunj is placed among the posh residential colonies of New Delhi. It is divided into many sectors which is further subdivided into pockets. It is situated at a distance of 4km from Munirka and 1km from Mehrauli. The colony constitutes commercial hubs, reputed schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

Janakpuri
Situated in west Delhi, Janakpuri is one the largest colonies of Delhi. It is divided into four major blocks and further subdivided into sub blocks. It is well connected with other parts ofthe city with bus and metro rail. It is a middle class residential area and favoured by many Delhi-ites.

Karol Bagh
Karol Bagh is an old market and located in the west-central Delhi. The Ajmal Khan Road and Pusa Road are extended around Karol Bagh. The area is partially dominated by Tamil speaking population. Karol Bagh is also a well-known market in Delhi.

Vasant Vihar
Vasant Vihar is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city. Its proximity to the International Airport has made it a posh residential colony. This area has undergone massive development in the past few years and houses several educational institutes, embassies, markets and other important establishments. The two main streets in Vasant Vihar are Poorvi Marg and Paschimi Marg. The roads are very clean and people get a high class environment to live in.

South Extension
South Extension is located on Ring Road and is locally called South Ex. It has two parts: Part-I and Part-II, located on the both sidesof the road. It is a main shopping centre of the city which includes show rooms of various renowned brands of apparels. It remains busy on weekends as it is open on Sundays. It is shut on Mondays.
